If you’re a traveler who enjoys the surprises—big and small—that occur when you explore the world, Celebrity Cruises’ aptly named new vessel may be perfect for you. And the 2,900-guest Celebrity Edge offers so many “wows” and first-evers, it may just revolutionize the modern cruise experience.

The star of the show? The Magic Carpet, the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform reaching 14 decks above sea level. Situated on the starboard side of the ship, the outward-facing glass deck moves up and down the tangerine-colored frame, sometimes appearing on Deck 5 as a restaurant and bar and, on other days, on Deck 15 as a live music venue. Or on Deck 2 to access a tender.

Technology, partnered with the philosophy of immersive cruising and bringing guests closer to the ocean, is evident in another industry first—the Infinite Veranda. Celebrity Cruises President Lisa Lutoff-Perlo described it as the “most transformational” aspect of Edge stateroom design. With the push of a button, you have the best of both inside and outside living. You can sit before the large windows and catch the ocean breeze or lower the shade and close the bifold doors for the evening. Advantages include adding 23 percent more living space to your room—space that would normally be outside on a traditional veranda.

Arguably the most intriguing space on Edge is Eden. The outward-facing venue, which epitomizes the whimsy found throughout the vessel, features three stories of windows at the back of the ship. Accessed through a forest of golden trees, Eden isn’t simply dinner and a show. In the evening, you’re greeted by an Edenist who leads you through your experience. Enjoy a nature-inspired meal while studying a nearby contortionist’s efforts to un-knot himself. Or sip wine as a mystical fortune teller weaves a tale of your future. There may be live music. Or dancers. One never knows in Eden.

Another important venue is the 903-seat Theatre, a theater-in-the-round that presents original performances. “Hype,” which stars charismatic singer Marcus Terell and features backup singers, dancers and a seven-piece orchestra, is a pop concert wrapped in a light show with the whopping 154 speakers of the unparalleled-at-sea Constellation System. “The Jewelry Box” brings guests inside an epic Star Wars/Black Panther-ish movie, complete with aerialists, dancers on hoverboards, live music and rain on the stage. Just outside The Theater is The Club, which is a nightclub in the evening and a gaming venue by day.

Dining on Edge—there are 29 total restaurants, cafes, bars and lounges—is an ongoing surprise. Four main dining rooms, each with a distinctive regional concept and decor, feature the same dining menu but with special additions from their geographic area.

Seven new specialty restaurants include Raw on 5, a sophisticated spot for oysters, crab and lobsters as well as sushi. The stunning Rooftop Garden Grill, specializing in backyard BBQ favorites, is especially appealing under the stars. And don’t miss the whimsical Le Petit Chef, a dining experience in Le Grand Bistro. Using technology created by Skullmapping and presented by TableMation Studios, your tabletop comes to life as clever animated characters demonstrate food prep before the real thing appears on your plate.

The next in the Edge Class, Celebrity Apex, is set to launch in 2020.
