Pump Prices Fa-la-la-la-la into December

AAA forecasts a 5 to 20 cent decrease in the coming weeks

Heading into December, gas prices are trending lower across the state and country. This week, the statewide average fell 1.1 cents to $2.394 per gallon. Nationwide, prices shed 2.6 cents to $2.495 per gallon.

“While drivers will not find significant holiday savings at the pump, we expect gas prices to trend lower through the year-end, barring unforeseen circumstances,” said Michelle Donati, spokesperson for AAA Arizona.

In 2017, gas prices have strayed from typical trends. Historically, year-end gas prices tend to be among the lowest of the year due to a drop-off in fall gasoline demand and the move to cheaper to produce winter-blend gasoline.

"This year, the typical factors that drive gas prices down in winter were outweighed by the impact of two major hurricanes, steady consumer demand and continued growth in gasoline exports," Donati said.

Today, motorists can find gas for $2.50 or less at 63 percent of gas stations nationwide. Arizona’s year-to-date fuel average is $2.28, and the majority of gas stations across the state are selling fuel for $2.50 or less. About 18 percent of Arizona gas stations are selling fuel for $2.51 or more, two percent are selling fuel for $2.75 or more and just one percent are selling fuel for $3 or more.

Alabama and California hold the lowest and highest average price for the lower 48 states at $2.226 and $3.183 per gallon.
