East Coast Gas Prices Rise as Storm Approaches

Hurricane Florence not likely to raise Arizona fuel prices

As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast, gasoline and diesel supplies in the path of the storm are starting to tighten.

“A storm like this typically causes an increase in fuel purchases in the market and a slowdown in retail demand," said Michelle Donati, spokeswoman for AAA Arizona. "However, it is important to note that there will not be a gasoline shortage across the country, but instead temporary outages in certain areas affected by the storm."

On the week, the national gas price average shed a penny to land at $2.84 per gallon. Prices in Arizona have been stable, increasing a fraction of a penny to $2.86. With the switch to winter-blend gasoline fast approaching (September 15), gas prices are expected to decline this month. AAA forecasts that the national gas price average will drop to $2.70 this fall and has the potential to drop even more.

Alabama and California hold the lowest and highest average price for the lower 48 states at $2.52 and $3.63 per gallon.
