Why am I receiving a new policy number?
Because we are moving to a new computer system and to prevent confusion with existing policies on old systems, we have to issue a new number that is associated to the new system.


Will my policy term, limits, or coverage change?
No, there will be no changes to your term, limits, or coverage. These critical policy elements will continue as per your current policy. If you wish to make any changes to your limits or coverage, you can do so by contacting your local agent or call us at 800-922-8228.


Why are you changing the billing plan?
For Members with a California AAA Car policy that has a 7 digit policy number (not starting with “PAA”), we listened to your feedback and to be more consistent with industry standard billing practices, we no longer offer a plan with unequal monthly payments. Our new plans have equal payments with flat installment fees.


Will my Home, Renter’s, Condo, or any other of my AAA insurance products be affected by this change?
Not at this time. Only our auto insurance policies for Northern California are affected at this time. Eventually we may move other policies to new systems. If we do, you will receive advance and separate notifications from us.


Why did I get notified that my Automatic Payment Plan isn’t carrying over to my new policy? What do I need to do to continue in automatic payment?
If you signed up for automatic payment through our website anytime since June 2010, our new system is unable to transfer this Automatic Payment Plan to your new policy. We apologize for the inconvenience. In order to continue in automatic payment, you’ll need to call us at 800-922-8228 to re-enroll. Please call before your renewal date. That date is found on your “Auto Insurance Renewal Offer Notice,” which is included in your renewal pack mailed to you about 30 days before your renewal date.


Why did I get notified that I have to change my home banking details with my bank/financial institution? How do I change my home banking details with my bank / financial institution?
Because your policy number is changing and our payment address is changing, you will need to visit your financial institution’s website and update your AAA account information. Using the new policy number we send you in your renewal pack, update your policy number on your home banking website. Also, update the AAA payment address to: PO Box 60277, Los Angeles, CA 90060-0277.

Choose the Get Directions tab on the AAA Maps and Driving Directions page. Enter your starting address in the Starting address field and enter your destination address in the Ending address field. Once you are done, select Get Directions to start your search. For best results, enter the addresses as completely and accurately as possible.

If you already mapped a location, select Get Directions.  A new Starting address field will appear.  Enter your starting address and select Get Directions again to obtain your directions.  You can change your mapped location to a starting address by clicking on From Here in the bubble on the map; enter your destination address in the Enter an Address field and select Go.

If you know you have entered your information correctly but the results are incorrect, it's possible that the street you are looking for may be new and not yet in our database.

If you know the name of an older street near the new location, we suggest entering that street name into the address field so that you can at least generate a map of the general area you're interested in.

However, if the street is not new and the results are still incorrect, it may be the result of some technical difficulties with our data. Please contact us and include the exact address or addresses you were trying to locate. Be sure to include what the inaccuracies were in the directions. You may also call for website support at 1-888-929-2911. We’ll work to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. ss

Although AAA is nationwide, each state has its own association, with its own website to support its Members. If you recently moved from another area and tried to register your club's Member number with AAA.com, you would have received an error message.

If you are a current resident of Northern California, Nevada, or Utah and your out-of-area Membership has not been expired for more than 60 days, you may call us at 1-800-922-8228 and have your Membership transferred. If your Membership expired more than 60 days ago, a new account would have to be established and a one-time enrollment fee of $17.00 may apply.

You may transfer your AAA Membership to the club in your new area when your AAA Membership expires with the AAA of Northern California, Nevada and Utah.

You may transfer your AAA Membership one of two ways:

A: The method you used to initially set up your insurance policy automatic payment or Membership automatic renewal determines how you can update your payment information.

Online
If you previously signed up online for either automatic renewal of your AAA Membership or automatic payments for your AAA Insurance policy you can only update your payment information online.

To update or change your payment information (credit card, debit card or bank account number) online, simply log in to your account and follow these steps:

  1. Select the existing credit/debit card or bank account under “Select a payment method”.
  2. Click in the “Card Number” box.
  3. Delete the existing number in that box and enter the new credit/debit card or bank account number.
  4. If updating a credit card, click in the “Expiration Date” box.
  5. Delete the existing expiration date in that box and enter the new expiration date.
  6. Click the “Continue” button to save your changes.


By Phone
If you previously signed up over the phone for automatic renewal of your AAA Membership or automatic payments for your AAA Insurance policy, you can only update your credit card information by phone.

To update or change your payment information (credit card, debit card or bank account number) by phone, please call AAA Members Service Center at 800-922-8228 or your local branch.

Through Your Bank (AAA Insurance Automatic Payment Only)
If you use online bill pay or home banking through your financial institution to automatically make payments on your AAA Insurance policy, please contact your financial institution to update your payment information.

An Associate Member is a spouse or resident adult, and any dependent children 16-20 years old. Each added Associate Member in the household is attached to the primary AAA Membership. An Associate Member gets all the same features and benefits as the Primary Member, but at a reduced annual rate. Each AAA Membership is limited to a maximum of 8 associates.

Associate Members can become Primary Members by simply purchasing their own Membership either online, at a nearby AAA branch office, or over the phone by calling 1-800-922-8228.

Adding an Associate to your AAA Membership is easy:

•  Click on the Sign in to My AAA link on the top left of the home page. If you are not currently registered, select Register Now.
•  If you are registered, enter your email address and password. Click Sign In.
•  You'll be taken to your My AAA page, which contains your personal information about your AAA Membership.
•  Scroll down to Associate Members and click the Add New Associate Member link.

Yes, you can make a one-time payment to renew your AAA Membership. Members can sign in to My AAA and pay their annual dues. Please note that one-time payments can only be made during your renewal period, which starts 30 days prior to your Membership expiration date.

There could be several reasons that you are unable to add an Associate Member to your account:

•  You are not the Primary Member on the account; only the Primary Member or the spouse/resident adult of the Primary Member may add an Associate
•  You already have the maximum number of Associates in your household.

If you recently renewed your AAA Membership or upgraded your Membership online, the online system may be temporarily unable to process this request. Please call Member Services at 1-800-922-8228 for additional assistance.

If your automatic renewal payment was rejected, it could be for one of the following reasons:

• Your credit limit has been reached
• Your credit card has expired
• Your credit card account is no longer active

If you choose to reapply for the automatic renewal program or to make a payment by phone, please contact Member Services at 1-800-922-8228.

Note: If you reapply for automatic renewal within 7-10 days of your expiration date, the program cannot charge your credit card for your current Membership dues. You must make a separate payment for the current year. However, your automatic renewal program will begin the following year.

AAA Gas Price Finder collects pricing information from over 85,000 gas stations across the United States.  Our results are based on gas prices supplied within the last 7 days, but many are updated within the last 24 hours.

In order to renew your AAA Membership online, you must first check to see if you are in your renewal period. AAA Membership renewal period begins 30 days prior to your Membership expiration date.

Simply Sign in. You will see a Renew link next to your Membership Info. If you are within your renewal period, clicking the link will take to you the Renew transaction. If you are not within the renewal period, you will see a message when the page refreshes, displaying the good-through dates of your AAA Membership.

Shortly after filing a claim, you will receive a confirmation letter that includes your adjuster's name and phone number. You may also call our claims customer service at (800) 922-8228. Adjusting staff is available 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorcycle insurance adjusting staff is available 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Automobiles: You may get an estimate from an auto repair shop of your own choosing or visit an auto body shop in AAA's Direct Repair Network. Our Direct Repair Network (DRN) of auto body shops handles claims for AAA Auto Insurance policyholders in California and Nevada. If you choose to use one of our DRN shops, the shop will contact you to schedule an appointment for an estimate. If you choose a shop that is not included in our repair network, you will need to schedule an appointment yourself.

Motorcycles: You may get an estimate from a motorcycle repair shop of your own choosing. Please contact your adjuster to coordinate an inspection at the shop of your choice. In addition, we may assign an independent appraiser to estimate your damages.

If you suffer a loss for which you are legally entitled to recovery and we have already made payment to you under your policy, we may pursue reimbursement from the responsible party or their insurance carrier. At that time, we will attempt to recover any additional repair expenses you've paid.

However, if you are injured, the law does not allow us to present your personal injury claim against another party or insurer. If you have medical payments coverage on your policy, we can assist with your resulting medical bills within the terms, limits and conditions of your policy.

In order to determine who is at fault in an accident, an investigation is conducted as to the facts of the loss.

If there is a police report, it may cite basic facts about the causes of the accident such as whether anyone involved was driving at an unsafe speed for the road conditions, made an unsafe lane change, followed another car too closely, etc. Also, the reporting officer may have included his opinion as to who was at fault or may have issued a citation to one of the parties. All of these factors will be weighed in determining liability.

We will also independently investigate whether all the parties involved followed the rules of the road, and whether one or more parties contributed to the conditions that led to the accident. Once all the facts have been ascertained, a liability decision is reached and the claim is processed accordingly.

If you do not agree with the liability decision reached for your auto insurance claim, please state your reasons in writing and send the statement to us at CSAA, P.O. Box 920, Suisun City, CA 94585.

Be sure to include your claim number. The letter will be reviewed and your concerns will be addressed.

A deductible is the amount of money shown on your policy for which you are financially responsible when you incur a collision or comprehensive loss. Other circumstances may affect the applicability of a deductible.

Payment
When you pick up your repaired vehicle, you pay your deductible amount directly to the repair facility. If a settlement payment is being made directly to you, we will subtract your deductible from that amount.

Reimbursement
If the other driver was at fault and we have pursued a subrogation claim against that driver, we will reimburse you for your deductible once we have collected it. (Subrogation describes the process we undergo when we attempt to recover from the at-fault party any monies paid out by us for damage to an insured vehicle.) For example, if you paid your deductible to a repair facility, we will reimburse you once we collect from the party who was at fault or from his or her insurer. This process can often take some time if the other party or carrier does not respond promptly to our requests for payment.

In order to file a claim for damage to your car, you must first must determine whether you have a "Glass-Only" claim or an "All Other Auto" claim.

AAA has a streamlined glass-only claims process. If you have Comprehensive Coverage, you will be covered for windshield replacement, but you will have to pay your deductible. If the window can be repaired rather than replaced, your deductible will be deferred.

Glass-only claims include:

Damage to the front windshield, driver side glass, passenger side glass and read-window glass
Cracks, chips or scratches to the glass and molding

There should be no damage to the body of the car or interior upholstery, and no missing personal property. If any of these conditions exist, the claim should be reported as an All Other Auto Claim.

All Other Auto claims include:

•  Damage to your vehicle
Damage to another vehicle
Damage to other property
Personal injury caused by an automobile accident
Theft of your vehicle or other personal property

If your automobile was damaged as the result of a loss covered under your auto insurance policy, then we will pay for rental car costs, subject to your policy's limits, terms and conditions. If you are involved in an accident, please call our toll-free claims reporting number: (800) 922-8228, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A police report should also be filed promptly for losses involving the theft of all or part of your vehicle, and within 24 hours for a hit-and-run loss involving injuries. Consult with your adjuster if you need more information. The time limits for filing a claim vary depending upon the type of claim you have. Therefore we encourage you to file your claim as soon as possible after a loss in order to preserve your rights.

If your vehicle is stolen, you should first notify your local law enforcement authority of the theft and promptly file a police report.

Immediately after, report your claim via our toll-free number: (800) 922-8228. We will review your policy for the appropriate coverage, collect needed information and begin working on your claim. If coverage applies, your policy will reimburse you for expenses incurred for alternative transportation, up to your coverage limits, beginning 48 hours after the theft occurs and ending when either the car is returned to use or when we offer to pay the loss.

Use the adhesive disk* to mount your device to your vehicle dashboard.

To install the adhesive disk:

  1. Use the enclosed alcohol pad to clean the dashboard where the adhesive disk will be applied. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  2. Remove the protective paper cover from the bottom of the adhesive disk.
  3. Place the bottom of the adhesive disk to the dashboard and apply firm, even pressure for a secure fit.
  4. Allow the adhesive disk to 'cure' in place for 24 hours, then mount the suction cup.

To mount the suction cup to the adhesive disk:

  1. Place the suction cup mount on top of adhesive disk.
  2. Press the suction cup mount down firmly - flat against the adhesive disk and press the suction cup lever down to secure the suction cup to the adhesive disk.

* Note: After installing the adhesive disk, removal of the disk may damage the dashboard surface.

While laws vary from state to state, there is only limited protection for used car purchases. All in all, it's easier to prevent a problem prior to purchase than it is to solve one afterwards. If you do have trouble after the sale and you can't resolve it yourself, contact your state's consumer protection agency for help. Here are some useful tips to consider:

Inspect before you buy: Always have a vehicle inspected by a mechanic of your choice prior to purchase. Never buy a used car unless you have the vehicle checked out by a certified mechanic first. If you don't and you have a problem after the sale, a judge may look at your transaction and say, "Why didn't you check the car out before you bought it?" (For help in finding a reputable mechanic, you can look into our AAA-Approved Auto Repair, or check out our Vehicle Inspsection & Smog Services.)

Safety issues take priority: If you bought a car from a used car dealer and have legitimate safety problems with the vehicle, the state may be able to help. It is illegal for an auto dealer to sell—or offer to sell—a vehicle with unsafe tires, damaged glass, non-working lights, or brakes that will not stop the car in 25 feet from a speed of 20 miles per hour. The vehicle must also pass a smog test at the time of sale.

If any of these problems are present at the time of sale, you may be able to force the dealer to make repairs. Be advised, if the dealer has any responsibility, it's usually to repair the problem, not to replace the car. Some dealerships may be willing to trade the vehicle for a different one from their stock. However, this is strictly voluntary on their part.

Good condition is not a requirement for sale: Basically, a car is not required to be in good condition at the time of its sale. In other words, if the engine blows up or the transmission fails two days after the sale, you may have no recourse. However, there is often an implied warranty of merchantability, which means that if you buy a car, it should "act like a car." Your car should be fit for normal use at the time that it's sold.

Get it in writing: If fraudulent or deceitful acts (such as a misleading oral statement) occurred during the sales process, you have the right to take legal action. However, without a witness, such acts can be difficult to prove. It's best to get any statements regarding the car's condition in writing prior to completing the purchase.

Once you sign an automobile sales contract, you're legally bound by all its terms and conditions. The contract can only be canceled if the dealership permits it, or if there is legal ground for it, such as fraud.

In fact, California state law requires the following statement to be printed on each retail sales contract and lease, and to be posted in each sales cubicle:

NO COOLING OFF PERIOD. California law does not provide for a "cooling off" or other cancellation period for vehicle lease or purchase contracts. Therefore, you cannot later cancel such a contract simply because you change your mind, decide the vehicle costs too much, or wish you had acquired a different vehicle. After you sign a motor vehicle purchase or lease contract, it may only be canceled with the agreement of the seller or lessor or for legal cause, such as fraud.

Before you buy a car, make sure that the contract you're signing reflects exactly what you're expecting, and that the car you're purchasing is exactly what you want—at the price you believe is fair. Do your homework before you go into the dealership, because you won't be able to change your mind later when you find out they charged you twice what the car is worth!

Unfortunately, it's impossible to say "This car is the safest one around." A car that does well in the government's frontal impact crash test may not perform as well in an offset or side-impact test. It's best to look at different types of safety data and evaluate the car based on your own concerns. Here are some resources for your comparison:

The Highway Loss Data Institute publishes insurance claim data that rates most cars for injury, collision and theft, based on models from the previous three years. While perhaps not as scientific as a lab test, this kind of data may be a better indicator of real-world performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has frontal-impact and frontal-offset crash test data on some new cars. The two tests complement each other; full-width frontal impact tests are especially demanding of restraints but less demanding of structure, while the reverse is true in offsets.

When the "Check Engine" light comes on, your car is telling you to have the computer system checked out at the earliest possible opportunity. Unlike, for example, an oil pressure light that means "STOP NOW!", a "Check Engine" light means that your car's computer system has recognized a fault in one of its circuits.

If an open or shorted condition in a circuit is indicated, the "Check Engine" light will come on and a trouble code will be stored in the computer's memory. The trouble code indicates which circuit is affected. The technician working on the car can then retrieve the trouble code and determine the exact problem.

Trouble codes can result from a mechanical problem that "fools" a sensor as well as a true electrical fault, so be sure to get a thorough diagnosis done on the problem.

There's a great deal of debate over this. People who regularly use synthetic oils swear by synthetic oils, and people who regularly use conventional oils swear by conventional oils. For most driving conditions, your engine will be properly protected by conventional oil.

However, if your vehicle is subject to extreme conditions, such as sustained high speeds, high loads, extremely dusty conditions, racing, towing, or use of a turbocharger, conventional oil may not adequately protect your engine. The key is to change your oil at the proper intervals.

Synthetic oils claim to allow a longer interval between changes. This claim is countered by those who point out that regardless of the condition of the oil, contamination from outside sources such as blow-by and moisture cannot be removed by filtering, and regardless of the lubricating properties of the oil, when contamination reaches unacceptable conditions, the oil and filter should be changed.

The main attractions of synthetic oil are its improved lubricating properties and extended oil change intervals. The trade-off is cost. Synthetic oils can cost as much as four to five times more than conventional oils. This cost increase can cancel out the savings you gain by increased change intervals.

Another factor to consider is overall maintenance. If you're going to a repair facility for your conventional oil changes every 3,000 miles, this means that a trained technician is regularly inspecting your car for potential problems. Your mechanic will check things like fluid levels, belts, hoses, tire wear patterns, under-car oil or transmission fluid leaks and other items that can help prevent breakdowns or expensive repairs. For example, replacing a weak coolant hose can prevent having that hose burst in traffic, with resultant overheating and engine damage. This type of preventive maintenance can greatly extend the life of your car. If you use a synthetic oil and only change it every 10,000 miles or more, then you're not getting your car inspected by that mechanic anywhere near as frequently, and problems may be more likely to develop between inspections.

If you're doing your own oil changes, you need to be aware of these types of inspections and perform them yourself. If you do these inspections regularly every 3,000 miles, you can possibly extend your oil change intervals by using synthetic oil; however, don't forget about problems such as moisture and blow-by contamination.

Synthetic oils do lubricate better. However, given the high quality of today's conventional oils, the high cost of synthetic oils, and the other factors involved in determining oil change intervals (and therefore cost-per-mile), there may not be an advantage in using synthetic oils for normal operation. If you're putting a lot of stress on your oil, you might consider a change to synthetic oil and staying with a short change interval. This provides the protection of synthetic oil, although your costs will increase. Those costs should be balanced against the possible cost of premature engine repairs due to excessive wear from harsh operating conditions.

There's no easy answer to the question of conventional versus synthetic oils. The answer depends on your driving, your maintenance, and your personal preferences. Generally, if your vehicle is subject to extreme conditions, synthetic oils may well be worth considering.

There's always something you can do to save on gas. Here are some tips:

Improve Your Mileage

Plan your driving routes so that you can travel at constant speeds. Try to avoid rush hours; travel when traffic is light.
Carpool.
Newer cars start differently than older ones. If you have to start a newer car by pumping the accelerator pedal, something is wrong. Have it checked.
Don't warm up your engine with extended idling. Instead, accelerate gently and try to avoid highway driving for the first mile or so.
Don’t let your car idle for more than a minute. Idling consumes a half-gallon to a gallon of gas per hour, and wastes more gas than restarting the engine.
Don’t rev the engine and quickly turn off the ignition (an old, but unwise, practice). This wastes fuel and dumps raw gasoline on the cylinder walls, where it can wash away a protective oil film, increasing engine wear.
Brake gradually. The more you can anticipate traffic conditions, the more you can reduce your need to brake.
Build up speed early when you approach a hill. If your car has a manual transmission, shift to a lower gear when the accelerator pedal is three-quarters of the way to the floor.
Use air conditioning sparingly.
Don’t fill your gas tank completely when the weather is hot. Fuel expansion can cause the tank to overflow.

Consider Your Options

When buying a new car, it’s always wise to consider fuel economy:

An automatic transmission generally uses more gas than a manual transmission.
Radial tires reduce rolling resistance, usually at a fuel savings of five to 10 percent.
Cruise control may save you gas if you drive a lot on the open road.
Tune Up Your Car

An out-of-tune car can use three to eight percent more fuel. Service your car’s engine at least once a year, and keep the following points in mind:

Spark plugs must be in good condition.
The ignition timing should be properly adjusted.
Have the engine’s idling speed set to specification.
The automatic choke should not stick—this wastes gas.
Your carburetor's air-fuel mixture should be properly adjusted.
Check the air filter twice a year.
Inflate tires to the pressures recommended by the manufacturer.

AAA Official Appointments Lodgings

Official Appointment properties have shown a special interest in serving AAA Members. This helps our Members find accommodations on which they can depend. In addition, an Official Appointment hotel may choose to offer AAA Members up to two special amenities, such as, room upgrade, early check in, high-speed internet, or free breakfast. Such amenities will be noted in the listing.

Annually, lodging operators are asked to update rates, discounts and rate options for AAA Members, but properties are not required to offer a discount to be listed. However, if the SAVE icon appears in the listing then the hotel offers either a minimum 10% discount off the standard room rate or the lowest public rate available at the time of booking for the dates of your stay.

Exceptions - Lodgings may temporarily increase their room rates or modify their policies during a special event or for those traveling as part of a group or convention. Examples of such events range from Mardi Gras and the Kentucky Derby to college football games, holidays and state fairs. At these times the rate options do not apply.

In a few places on our website we open another web page window. Microsoft Internet Explorer Users
Internet Explorer 6.0 with the SP2 patch, includes a Pop-up Blocker. It should be configured to allow new window requests/pop-ups from AAA.com and calstate.aaa.com. To configure the Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer:

Click on "Tools", then "Pop-up Blocker".
Then click on "Pop-up Blocker Settings" to configure the pop-up blocker or "Turn Off Pop-up Blocker" if you want to disable or temporarily disable the pop-up blocker.
If you chose to configure the blocker settings, add calstate.aaa.com (or www.calstate.aaa.com) and AAA.com (or www.AAA.com) to the "Allowed sites."
You could also check the box (if not already checked) next to "Show Information Bar when a pop-up is blocked." With this checked, if you are on a website, such as Internet TripTik and a link or button does not seem to work, the Information Bar acts like an alert mechanism. Click on it to see your options. Your options should include allowing pop-ups from the website you are currently on.

Netscape Users
Newer versions of Netscape include a "Popup Manager". It is enabled by default to stop "popup" windows from opening. This should be changed to allow pop ups from AAA.com and www.calstate.aaa.com.

To change:

Click on Edit > Preferences;
Expand the Privacy & Security Category and click on Popup Windows;
Make sure there is not a dark circle in the circle next to "Suppress popups," by clicking on the "Allowed popups" circle and then click on Exceptions button to add both calstate.aaa.com (or www.calstate.aaa.com) and AAA.com (or www.AAA.com).

AAA.com introduced a new website to our Members effective January 2007. As a result of this change, all users previously registered with AAA.com must now re-register using their email address as a username.

The AAA federation has a single government affairs office located in Washington D.C. which represents all clubs on a national level. This office serves as the federal representative on national legislation, such as the Clean Air Act. Each individual club has representatives at the state level, covering local issues.

The California State Automobile Association, which is the second-largest AAA affiliate, covers Northern California, Nevada and Utah. We have a government affairs staff working with the legislatures in those three states.

A: The method you used to initially set up your insurance policy automatic payment or Membership automatic renewal determines how you can update your payment information.

Online
If you previously signed up online for either automatic renewal of your AAA Membership or automatic payments for your AAA Insurance policy you can only update your payment information online.

To update or change your payment information (credit card, debit card or bank account number) online, simply log in to your account and follow these steps:

  1. Select the existing credit/debit card or bank account under “Select a payment method”.
  2. Click in the “Card Number” box.
  3. Delete the existing number in that box and enter the new credit/debit card or bank account number.
  4. If updating a credit card, click in the “Expiration Date” box.
  5. Delete the existing expiration date in that box and enter the new expiration date.
  6. Click the “Continue” button to save your changes.


By Phone
If you previously signed up over the phone for automatic renewal of your AAA Membership or automatic payments for your AAA Insurance policy, you can only update your credit card information by phone.

When the "Check Engine" light comes on, your car is telling you to have the computer system checked out at the earliest possible opportunity. Unlike, for example, an oil pressure light that means "STOP NOW!", a "Check Engine" light means that your car's computer system has recognized a fault in one of its circuits.

If an open or shorted condition in a circuit is indicated, the "Check Engine" light will come on and a trouble code will be stored in the computer's memory. The trouble code indicates which circuit is affected. The technician working on the car can then retrieve the trouble code and determine the exact problem.

Trouble codes can result from a mechanical problem that "fools" a sensor as well as a true electrical fault, so be sure to get a thorough diagnosis done on the problem.

There's a great deal of debate over this. People who regularly use synthetic oils swear by synthetic oils, and people who regularly use conventional oils swear by conventional oils. For most driving conditions, your engine will be properly protected by conventional oil.

However, if your vehicle is subject to extreme conditions, such as sustained high speeds, high loads, extremely dusty conditions, racing, towing, or use of a turbocharger, conventional oil may not adequately protect your engine. The key is to change your oil at the proper intervals.

Synthetic oils claim to allow a longer interval between changes. This claim is countered by those who point out that regardless of the condition of the oil, contamination from outside sources such as blow-by and moisture cannot be removed by filtering, and regardless of the lubricating properties of the oil, when contamination reaches unacceptable conditions, the oil and filter should be changed.

The main attractions of synthetic oil are its improved lubricating properties and extended oil change intervals. The trade-off is cost. Synthetic oils can cost as much as four to five times more than conventional oils. This cost increase can cancel out the savings you gain by increased change intervals.

Another factor to consider is overall maintenance. If you're going to a repair facility for your conventional oil changes every 3,000 miles, this means that a trained technician is regularly inspecting your car for potential problems. Your mechanic will check things like fluid levels, belts, hoses, tire wear patterns, under-car oil or transmission fluid leaks and other items that can help prevent breakdowns or expensive repairs. For example, replacing a weak coolant hose can prevent having that hose burst in traffic, with resultant overheating and engine damage. This type of preventive maintenance can greatly extend the life of your car. If you use a synthetic oil and only change it every 10,000 miles or more, then you're not getting your car inspected by that mechanic anywhere near as frequently, and problems may be more likely to develop between inspections.

If you're doing your own oil changes, you need to be aware of these types of inspections and perform them yourself. If you do these inspections regularly every 3,000 miles, you can possibly extend your oil change intervals by using synthetic oil; however, don't forget about problems such as moisture and blow-by contamination.

Synthetic oils do lubricate better. However, given the high quality of today's conventional oils, the high cost of synthetic oils, and the other factors involved in determining oil change intervals (and therefore cost-per-mile), there may not be an advantage in using synthetic oils for normal operation. If you're putting a lot of stress on your oil, you might consider a change to synthetic oil and staying with a short change interval. This provides the protection of synthetic oil, although your costs will increase. Those costs should be balanced against the possible cost of premature engine repairs due to excessive wear from harsh operating conditions.

There's no easy answer to the question of conventional versus synthetic oils. The answer depends on your driving, your maintenance, and your personal preferences. Generally, if your vehicle is subject to extreme conditions, synthetic oils may well be worth considering.

There's always something you can do to save on gas. Here are some tips:

Improve Your Mileage

Plan your driving routes so that you can travel at constant speeds. Try to avoid rush hours; travel when traffic is light.
Carpool.
Newer cars start differently than older ones. If you have to start a newer car by pumping the accelerator pedal, something is wrong. Have it checked.
Don't warm up your engine with extended idling. Instead, accelerate gently and try to avoid highway driving for the first mile or so.
Don’t let your car idle for more than a minute. Idling consumes a half-gallon to a gallon of gas per hour, and wastes more gas than restarting the engine.
Don’t rev the engine and quickly turn off the ignition (an old, but unwise, practice). This wastes fuel and dumps raw gasoline on the cylinder walls, where it can wash away a protective oil film, increasing engine wear.
Brake gradually. The more you can anticipate traffic conditions, the more you can reduce your need to brake.
Build up speed early when you approach a hill. If your car has a manual transmission, shift to a lower gear when the accelerator pedal is three-quarters of the way to the floor.
Use air conditioning sparingly.
Don’t fill your gas tank completely when the weather is hot. Fuel expansion can cause the tank to overflow.

Consider Your Options

When buying a new car, it’s always wise to consider fuel economy:

An automatic transmission generally uses more gas than a manual transmission.
Radial tires reduce rolling resistance, usually at a fuel savings of five to 10 percent.
Cruise control may save you gas if you drive a lot on the open road.
Tune Up Your Car

An out-of-tune car can use three to eight percent more fuel. Service your car’s engine at least once a year, and keep the following points in mind:

Spark plugs must be in good condition.
The ignition timing should be properly adjusted.
Have the engine’s idling speed set to specification.
The automatic choke should not stick—this wastes gas.
Your carburetor's air-fuel mixture should be properly adjusted.
Check the air filter twice a year.
Inflate tires to the pressures recommended by the manufacturer.

While laws vary from state to state, there is only limited protection for used car purchases. All in all, it's easier to prevent a problem prior to purchase than it is to solve one afterwards. If you do have trouble after the sale and you can't resolve it yourself, contact your state's consumer protection agency for help. Here are some useful tips to consider:

Inspect before you buy: Always have a vehicle inspected by a mechanic of your choice prior to purchase. Never buy a used car unless you have the vehicle checked out by a certified mechanic first. If you don't and you have a problem after the sale, a judge may look at your transaction and say, "Why didn't you check the car out before you bought it?" Safety issues take priority: If you bought a car from a used car dealer and have legitimate safety problems with the vehicle, the state may be able to help. It is illegal for an auto dealer to sell—or offer to sell—a vehicle with unsafe tires, damaged glass, non-working lights, or brakes that will not stop the car in 25 feet from a speed of 20 miles per hour. The vehicle must also pass a smog test at the time of sale.

If any of these problems are present at the time of sale, you may be able to force the dealer to make repairs. Be advised, if the dealer has any responsibility, it's usually to repair the problem, not to replace the car. Some dealerships may be willing to trade the vehicle for a different one from their stock. However, this is strictly voluntary on their part.

Good condition is not a requirement for sale: Basically, a car is not required to be in good condition at the time of its sale. In other words, if the engine blows up or the transmission fails two days after the sale, you may have no recourse. However, there is often an implied warranty of merchantability, which means that if you buy a car, it should "act like a car." Your car should be fit for normal use at the time that it's sold.

Get it in writing: If fraudulent or deceitful acts (such as a misleading oral statement) occurred during the sales process, you have the right to take legal action. However, without a witness, such acts can be difficult to prove. It's best to get any statements regarding the car's condition in writing prior to completing the purchase.

Once you sign an automobile sales contract, you're legally bound by all its terms and conditions. The contract can only be canceled if the dealership permits it, or if there is legal ground for it, such as fraud.

In fact, California state law requires the following statement to be printed on each retail sales contract and lease, and to be posted in each sales cubicle:

NO COOLING OFF PERIOD. California law does not provide for a "cooling off" or other cancellation period for vehicle lease or purchase contracts. Therefore, you cannot later cancel such a contract simply because you change your mind, decide the vehicle costs too much, or wish you had acquired a different vehicle. After you sign a motor vehicle purchase or lease contract, it may only be canceled with the agreement of the seller or lessor or for legal cause, such as fraud.

Before you buy a car, make sure that the contract you're signing reflects exactly what you're expecting, and that the car you're purchasing is exactly what you want—at the price you believe is fair. Do your homework before you go into the dealership, because you won't be able to change your mind later when you find out they charged you twice what the car is worth!

The Highway Loss Data Institute publishes insurance claim data that rates most cars for injury, collision and theft, based on models from the previous three years. While perhaps not as scientific as a lab test, this kind of data may be a better indicator of real-world performance.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has frontal-impact and frontal-offset crash test data on some new cars. The two tests complement each other; full-width frontal impact tests are especially demanding of restraints but less demanding of structure, while the reverse is true in offsets.

Use the adhesive disk* to mount your device to your vehicle dashboard.

To install the adhesive disk:

  1. Use the enclosed alcohol pad to clean the dashboard where the adhesive disk will be applied. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  2. Remove the protective paper cover from the bottom of the adhesive disk.
  3. Place the bottom of the adhesive disk to the dashboard and apply firm, even pressure for a secure fit.
  4. Allow the adhesive disk to 'cure' in place for 24 hours, then mount the suction cup.

To mount the suction cup to the adhesive disk:

  1. Place the suction cup mount on top of adhesive disk.
  2. Press the suction cup mount down firmly - flat against the adhesive disk and press the suction cup lever down to secure the suction cup to the adhesive disk.

Personal umbrella insurance is low-cost liability coverage that provides an extra measure of security beyond the limits of liability insurance on your AAA Auto and Home Insurance policies. Because an umbrella policy provides liability coverage only, it is designed to provide protection for you and those living with you but does not cover damage to your property. It will not, for instance, extend coverage on policies such as an earthquake policy.

Personal umbrella coverage is often referred to as "secondary coverage." That's because it is, with a few exceptions, excess coverage over underlying insurance. This means that the limits of the underlying insurance (your auto and homeowner's policies) will be exhausted before the umbrella coverage is needed. The underlying insurance pays first (primary insurance"), while the umbrella policy pays second ("secondary insurance").

Automobiles: You may get an estimate from an auto repair shop of your own choosing or visit an auto body shop in AAA's Direct Repair Network. Our Direct Repair Network (DRN) of auto body shops handles claims for AAA Auto Insurance policyholders in California and Nevada. If you choose to use one of our DRN shops, the shop will contact you to schedule an appointment for an estimate. If you choose a shop that is not included in our repair network, you will need to schedule an appointment yourself.

Motorcycles: You may get an estimate from a motorcycle repair shop of your own choosing. Please contact your adjuster to coordinate an inspection at the shop of your choice. In addition, we may assign an independent appraiser to estimate your damages.

In order to determine who is at fault in an accident, an investigation is conducted as to the facts of the loss.

If there is a police report, it may cite basic facts about the causes of the accident such as whether anyone involved was driving at an unsafe speed for the road conditions, made an unsafe lane change, followed another car too closely, etc. Also, the reporting officer may have included his opinion as to who was at fault or may have issued a citation to one of the parties. All of these factors will be weighed in determining liability.

We will also independently investigate whether all the parties involved followed the rules of the road, and whether one or more parties contributed to the conditions that led to the accident. Once all the facts have been ascertained, a liability decision is reached and the claim is processed accordingly.

If you do not agree with the liability decision reached for your auto insurance claim, please state your reasons in writing and send the statement to us at CSAA, P.O. Box 920, Suisun City, CA 94585.

Be sure to include your claim number. The letter will be reviewed and your concerns will be addressed.

A deductible is the amount of money shown on your policy for which you are financially responsible when you incur a collision or comprehensive loss. Other circumstances may affect the applicability of a deductible.

Payment
When you pick up your repaired vehicle, you pay your deductible amount directly to the repair facility. If a settlement payment is being made directly to you, we will subtract your deductible from that amount.

Reimbursement
If the other driver was at fault and we have pursued a subrogation claim against that driver, we will reimburse you for your deductible once we have collected it. (Subrogation describes the process we undergo when we attempt to recover from the at-fault party any monies paid out by us for damage to an insured vehicle.) For example, if you paid your deductible to a repair facility, we will reimburse you once we collect from the party who was at fault or from his or her insurer. This process can often take some time if the other party or carrier does not respond promptly to our requests for payment.

In order to file a claim for damage to your car, you must first must determine whether you have a "Glass-Only" claim or an "All Other Auto" claim.

AAA has a streamlined glass-only claims process. If you have Comprehensive Coverage, you will be covered for windshield replacement, but you will have to pay your deductible. If the window can be repaired rather than replaced, your deductible will be deferred.

Glass-only claims include:

Damage to the front windshield, driver side glass, passenger side glass and read-window glass
Cracks, chips or scratches to the glass and molding

There should be no damage to the body of the car or interior upholstery, and no missing personal property. If any of these conditions exist, the claim should be reported as an All Other Auto Claim.

All Other Auto claims include:

•  Damage to your vehicle
Damage to another vehicle
Damage to other property
Personal injury caused by an automobile accident
Theft of your vehicle or other personal property

If your automobile was damaged as the result of a loss covered under your auto insurance policy, then we will pay for rental car costs, subject to your policy's limits, terms and conditions. If you are involved in an accident, please call our toll-free claims reporting number: (800) 922-8228, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A police report should also be filed promptly for losses involving the theft of all or part of your vehicle, and within 24 hours for a hit-and-run loss involving injuries. Consult with your adjuster if you need more information. The time limits for filing a claim vary depending upon the type of claim you have. Therefore we encourage you to file your claim as soon as possible after a loss in order to preserve your rights.

If your vehicle is stolen, you should first notify your local law enforcement authority of the theft and promptly file a police report.

Immediately after, report your claim via our toll-free number: (800) 922-8228. We will review your policy for the appropriate coverage, collect needed information and begin working on your claim. A: The method you used to initially set up your insurance policy automatic payment or Membership automatic renewal determines how you can update your payment information.

Online
If you previously signed up online for either automatic renewal of your AAA Membership or automatic payments for your AAA Insurance policy you can only update your payment information online.

To update or change your payment information (credit card, debit card or bank account number) online, simply log in to your account and follow these steps:

  1. Select the existing credit/debit card or bank account under “Select a payment method”.
  2. Click in the “Card Number” box.
  3. Delete the existing number in that box and enter the new credit/debit card or bank account number.
  4. If updating a credit card, click in the “Expiration Date” box.
  5. Delete the existing expiration date in that box and enter the new expiration date.

An Associate Member is a spouse or resident adult, and any dependent children 16-20 years old. Each added Associate Member in the household is attached to the primary AAA Membership. An Associate Member gets all the same features and benefits as the Primary Member, but at a reduced annual rate. Each AAA Membership is limited to a maximum of 8 associates.

Adding an Associate to your AAA Membership is easy:

•  Click on the Sign in to My AAA link on the top left of the home page. If you are not currently registered, select Register Now.
•  If you are registered, enter your email address and password. Click Sign In.

Choose the Get Directions tab on the AAA Maps and Driving Directions page. Enter your starting address in the Starting address field and enter your destination address in the Ending address field. Once you are done, select Get Directions to start your search. For best results, enter the addresses as completely and accurately as possible.

If you already mapped a location, select Get Directions.  A new Starting address field will appear.  Enter your starting address and select Get Directions again to obtain your directions.  You can change your mapped location to a starting address by clicking on From Here in the bubble on the map; enter your destination address in the Enter an Address field and select Go.

AAA rating criteria reflect your needs and expectations and the design and service standards determined by the lodging industry. Additionally, we maintain an open dialogue with individual establishment operators, the American Hotel and Motel Association and most major lodging chains.

Lodging Evaluation Criteria
Properties listed by AAA are required to provide clean and well-maintained facilities throughout, a hospitable staff and a well-kept appearance. Each guest room is required to have: comfortable beds and good quality bedding, locks on all doors and windows, comfortable furnishings and pleasant décor, smoke detectors, adequate towels and supplies, at least one chair, and adequate illumination at each task area.

AAA's Diamond Ratings
After the minimum set of standards are met a property is assigned a diamond rating reflecting the overall quality of the establishment. The ratings range from one to five diamonds and reflect the physical and service standards typically found at each diamond level.

The ratings classification represents the physical design and level of services provided by the property. For example, a motel offers limited services and recreational facilities. A resort hotel offers extensive guest services and recreational facilities. AAA only compares properties to like properties.

A few properties are listed without a rating. They were either under construction or undergoing such a substantial renovation at publication time that it was impossible to assign an accurate rating. In addition, an "FYI" rating indicates a property that has not been inspected or does not meet the minimum listing requirements. The property is listed only as a service to our Members.

AAA Official Appointments 
Lodgings and restaurants approved by AAA are eligible for our Official Appointment Program, which permits the display and advertising of the AAA emblem. Official Appointment properties have shown a special interest in serving AAA Members. This helps our Members find accommodations on which they can depend. In addition, an Official Appointment hotel may choose to offer AAA Members up to two special amenities, such as, room upgrade, early check in, high-speed internet, or free breakfast. Such amenities will be noted in the listing.

Annually, lodging operators are asked to update rates, discounts and rate options for AAA Members, but properties are not required to offer a discount to be listed. However, if the SAVE icon appears in the listing then the hotel offers either a minimum 10% discount off the standard room rate or the lowest public rate available at the time of booking for the dates of your stay.

Exceptions - Lodgings may temporarily increase their room rates or modify their policies during a special event or for those traveling as part of a group or convention. Examples of such events range from Mardi Gras and the Kentucky Derby to college football games, holidays and state fairs. At these times the rate options do not apply.

Rates - Please note that rates are provided to AAA by each property and represent the publically available rate or ranges for a standard room. Rates are rounded to the nearest dollar and do not include taxes. U.S., Mexican, and Caribbean rates are in U.S. dollars; rates for Canadian lodgings are in Canadian dollars.

A standard per transaction fee of $5 will be charged for air reservations booked online.

Ordering paper tickets, rather than e-tickets, or booking itineraries where the airline requires a paper ticket may add an airline imposed fee of up to $20 to $25 per ticket (dependent on the airline), as well as delivery related fees.

Why am I receiving a new policy number?
Because we are moving to a new computer system and to prevent confusion with existing policies on old systems, we have to issue a new number that is associated to the new system.


Will my policy term, limits, or coverage change?
No, there will be no changes to your term, limits, or coverage. These critical policy elements will continue as per your current policy. If you wish to make any changes to your limits or coverage, you can do so by contacting your local agent or call us at 800-922-8228.


Why are you changing the billing plan?
For Members with a California AAA Car policy that has a 7 digit policy number (not starting with “PAA”), we listened to your feedback and to be more consistent with industry standard billing practices, we no longer offer a plan with unequal monthly payments. Our new plans have equal payments with flat installment fees.


Will my Home, Renter’s, Condo, or any other of my AAA insurance products be affected by this change?
Not at this time. Only our auto insurance policies for Northern California are affected at this time. Eventually we may move other policies to new systems. If we do, you will receive advance and separate notifications from us.


Why did I get notified that my Automatic Payment Plan isn’t carrying over to my new policy? What do I need to do to continue in automatic payment?
If you signed up for automatic payment through our website anytime since June 2010, our new system is unable to transfer this Automatic Payment Plan to your new policy. We apologize for the inconvenience. In order to continue in automatic payment, you’ll need to call us at 800-922-8228 to re-enroll. Please call before your renewal date. That date is found on your “Auto Insurance Renewal Offer Notice,” which is included in your renewal pack mailed to you about 30 days before your renewal date.


Why did I get notified that I have to change my home banking details with my bank/financial institution? How do I change my home banking details with my bank / financial institution?
Because your policy number is changing and our payment address is changing, you will need to visit your financial institution’s website and update your AAA account information. Using the new policy number we send you in your renewal pack, update your policy number on your home banking website. Also, update the AAA payment address to: PO Box 60277, Los Angeles, CA 90060-0277.

A: Auto insurance policyholders have two ways to sign up:

  • Contact a AAA Insurance agent directly.
  • Contact your local bank to setup automatic payments through Bill Pay or through Home banking directly from your checking or savings account.


Please note: If you sign up for automatic payments through an agent, it will not take effect for six to eight weeks. You must make a separate payment as normal until your bill indicates your policy has been set up on the automatic payment program.

AAA strives to provide our Members with exceptional service and are happy to assist you with how to change your password online. Changing your password online is a simple process, but you may need to refer to these instructions in the future.

To change your password:

From the AAA.com homepage, click Forgot Your Password?
Enter the email address you originally used to register.
AAA.com will automatically send you an email with instructions how to reset your password to login. Look for an email from webmaster@aaaemail.com with subject "Activate New AAA Password."
Click on the link provided
Follow the instructions provided in the new web browser that appears.

If you forgot the answer to your question you provided when establishing your online profile, click "Forgot Your Answer?"

Please note clicking "Forgot Your Answer?" will prompt you to establish a new profile. Here, you may use your same email account or a different one if preferred. Please write down the password and reminder answer you provide and keep in a safe location for your protection.

Enter and re-enter a new password you would like to use for your profile. Please write down this information and keep it in a safe location so you may refer to it if needed.

How to change or update your existing password:

Sign-in using your email address and password
Once in "My AAA," click Change Password next to "Password" under the heading "Password and Security Question."
Once in "My AAA," click Change Password next to "Password" under the heading "Password and Security Question."
Enter your existing password then enter and re-enter your new password
Your new password must contain between 7 and 15 characters with a combination of letters and numbers.
Click Save.

You can view your Member Renew information on AAA.com. Sign-in, or register to sign-in then sign-in, and you will be brought to “My AAA”. If you have already enrolled in Automatic Renewal, you will see a message indicating your enrollment date next to your Membership expiration date in the Membership Info section.

When you enroll in Automatic Membership Renewal online, please note it may take 3 to 5 days before the note appears in your “My AAA” section.

Registration is required in order to access AAA Members-only area on the website.

If you joined:

  • Online, you should have received your membership number right away and can access our online services using that number on the online registration.
  • Through the mail, you will need to wait to receive your permanent membership card to access our online services.
  • Through one of our sales representatives, you were given a temporary number to use for emergency roadside services. You will need to wait to receive your permanent membership card, to access our online services.

To register online once you have your AAA Membership card, you may click "Register" from our home page and follow the on-screen instructions. You must have a valid email address for this process as our system must verify your email address account before your registration is fully active.
