Carol Kubiak and her husband Milton relied on Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA Petbook to get them through a hastily organized car journey from Redwood City, CA to Buffalo, NY in fall 2005 with their two Airedale dogs.
“My sister-in-law had cancer, and we felt we had to hurry to the East coast to see her before she passed. So we loaded up our Airedales: Gypsy, our three-year-old, and Katy, who was just under a year old at the time. We zoomed across the country with the dogs in the back of the car and our luggage in a cartop carrier, just trying to make as many miles as we could as quickly as possible.
“We hadn’t had time to make hotel reservations before we left, so we used the AAA Traveling with Your Pet book to find lodging across the country as we went.
“I had stumbled across the book a year earlier at our local AAA office when I was there for some other service. I was so glad to have it on this trip. It gives a lot of helpful tips, such as reminding you to bring a record of all your pets’ shots whenever you travel.
“When we got to New York, we consulted the book and chose the Lord Amherst Motor Lodge. We spent three days there. It was great because it was a one-story building, so it was easy to get in and out of with dogs and luggage, and because they had a little grassy area behind the rooms where the dogs could romp and go to the bathroom.
“I felt very secure having the AAA Petbook with us. And when you’re traveling across country, it’s just nice to know that AAA is so helpful in general. No matter what city you’re in, you can find more maps and good advice. We have a lot of faith in AAA.”
